New Phase in Türkiye's KAAN Project: Second Prototype Released

French defense platform Forum Militaire announced that Turkey has passed a significant milestone in its fifth-generation fighter jet project, the KAAN. The report emphasized that by unveiling the second prototype (P1), Ankara is both demonstrating its technical progress and sending a strategic message to Washington.

According to information provided by the platform, images taken at Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) facilities on September 26, 2025, showed the second fuselage structure behind the P0 prototype, which made its maiden flight. This fuselage, designated "P1," is reportedly scheduled to fly in the spring of 2026.

Forum Militaire stated that the third prototype (P2) is also on the production line and is expected to fly in July 2026. The report stated, "P1 was produced not only for concept testing but also for performance validation purposes."

Differences in Design

The news also reported that the P1 prototype had some structural changes compared to the P0. Accordingly:

  • The nose of the aircraft is wider,

  • The air intake ducts are more harmoniously integrated with the body.

These changes are reportedly aimed at improving aerodynamic performance and sensor placement. The observed airframe does not yet include final components such as exterior panels, control surfaces, and radar-absorbent coating.

Specifications and Goals

According to the technical evaluation of Forum Militaire, KAAN,

  • It will be able to reach a top speed of Mach 1.8,

  • It will have a ceiling altitude of 55,000 feet,

  • In the first phase, it will fly with two GE F110-GE-129 engines.

The long-term goal is to develop a domestic engine. The aircraft will also feature modern features such as AESA radar, internal weapons bays, and a low radar signature.

Mass Production Will Begin in 2028

While the first prototype P0 is not expected to fly again, mass production is expected to begin in 2028 under the name "Block 10." Initial delivery of 20 aircraft is planned. Türkiye's long-term goal is to replace approximately 240 F-16s with the KAAN.

Strategic Message from Ankara

The report commented that Türkiye's unveiling of the second prototype carries not only a technical message but also a political one. KAAN's development demonstrates that Türkiye is strengthening its independent production capabilities in the defense industry and offering a new alternative to Western-centric defense balances.
